A South Dakota man accused of robbing another man at gunpoint on the University of Kansas campus last April has been brought to Douglas County to face an armed robbery charge, according to court documents.

The man, Broderick Andrew Roberts, 25, of Waubay, South Dakota, made his first appearance in Douglas County District Court on Tuesday and is charged with one felony count of aggravated robbery with a handgun, according to charging documents.

The charge against Roberts stems from a report of an armed robbery in the early morning hours of April 10, 2022, in the 1100 block of West Campus Road. Lawrence police responded to the call at 3:22 a.m. and then passed the information to KU police, according to KU Public Safety Deputy Chief James Druen.

Druen said that the suspect in the case reportedly held a man at gunpoint and forced him to transfer $300 via an internet app. The suspect also reportedly took $1 in cash from the man, Druen said.

On Tuesday, Roberts’ defense attorney, Robert Moody, said that if Roberts posts bond he should be allowed to return to South Dakota, where he was arrested. Moody said that Roberts was a student at Haskell Indian Nations University at the time of the alleged crime, but that he had since graduated and moved back to South Dakota, where he has stable housing and an 8-week-old child at home. Judge Stacey Donovan set a bond of $35,000 cash or surety and said that it would be up to pretrial services staff to determine whether they could monitor Roberts from South Dakota. She then scheduled Roberts’ next appearance for March 1 for a status conference.

The Journal-World has requested Roberts’ booking photo from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
