No suspect had been identified by Monday morning after a statue at Haskell Indian Nations University was vandalized late last week.
A Lawrence police officer was dispatched to Haskell Friday morning for a report of a statue being damaged with paint. The bronze statute by Craig Goseyun depicts an Apache hoop and pole game player. It was placed in 1997 at Haskell Indian Nations University.
Signs were also placed near the statue with messages expressing displeasure with the Bureau of Indian Education and the office of the U.S. Secretary of the Interior, police said.
Police are awaiting more information regarding security footage.
Haskell staff were able to power wash the paint off the statue as it was still wet, police said. The damage is believed to have occurred sometime between 5:30 am and 7 a.m. Friday. No suspect has been identified.
