A Lawrence man was charged on Tuesday in Douglas County District Court with armed robbery and kidnapping for an incident in April at a T-Mobile phone store.

Darien Khalil Chambers, 29, is charged with two felony counts of aggravated robbery with a handgun and two felony counts of kidnapping, according to charging documents. The documents say that on April 2 Chambers robbed two people of cellphone store merchandise at gunpoint and then held the two people by force to “facilitate flight or to facilitate the commission of a crime.”

At Chambers’ first appearance on Tuesday, Judge Blake Glover issued Chambers a $30,000 cash or surety bond. He ordered Chambers not to return to the T-Mobile store, 4801 Bauer Farm Drive.

Chambers’ defense attorney, Hatem Chahine, appeared at the Douglas County Jail via Zoom along with Chambers and asked for an own-recognizance bond. Glover denied the request and said he would refer additional bond questions to the judge who would be hearing the case, Judge Stacey Donovan.

Chambers was arrested on the charges around 8 a.m. Monday at the Lawrence Police Department headquarters. According to the jail booking log, he posted bond just before 6 p.m. Tuesday. He is next scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 25 for a scheduling conference.
