A Kansas City, Kansas, man was charged Wednesday in Douglas County District Court with aggravated assault and other crimes after allegedly holding a woman at gunpoint and refusing to put down a child while deputies tried to arrest him.

The man, Maurice McKay Edwards, 21, was charged with aggravated assault, felony criminal threat and two misdemeanor counts of endangering a child, according to court records.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call around 2:45 a.m. Wednesday in the 500 block of East 1100 Road, where it was reported that a man had allegedly hit a woman and then held a gun to her head while two children were present, said George Diepenbrock, a spokesman for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies arrived, a man was leaving a detached garage and holding a 2-year-old child, Diepenbrock said. Deputies ordered the man to release the child, and the man allegedly refused. Deputies determined the child was in danger, and one of the deputies pinned the man to the wall of the garage and freed the child from his grasp, Diepenbrock said.

Deputies later searched the garage and found a gun in a box, Diepenbrock said.

Edwards was later booked into the Douglas County Jail. He was released Wednesday afternoon on a $10,000 bond and will be monitored by GPS to prevent him from returning to the property where the incident occurred, according to court records.
