In this file photo from Aug. 4, 2020, a Lawrence Police Department patrol vehicle is pictured outside the Douglas County Judicial and Law Enforcement Center.

Three Lawrence teens allegedly shot toy projectiles at anti-mask protesters on Sunday, resulting in a police response.

Lt. David Ernst of the Lawrence Police Department said that around 5 p.m. officers responded to a report of the teens shooting what the alleged victims believed to be projectiles from a paintball gun while they were demonstrating at the intersection of McDonald Drive and Second Street, which is near the Lawrence school district administration offices.

The officers later determined the projectiles were water bead gel balls, which are used in toy rifles. No injuries were reported.

Ernst said officers stopped a vehicle of the three suspects at the intersection of Trail Road and Roundabout Circle in western Lawrence. The officers interviewed the teens and released them to their parents.

An affidavit has been filed with the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office for charging consideration, Ernst said.
