1 person dead, 2 seriously injured after head-on crash; police investigating whether impaired driving played a role

Story updated at 4:01 p.m. Jan. 1:

One person has died and two other people suffered suspected serious injuries after a head-on crash Saturday morning, and the Lawrence Police Department is investigating impaired driving as a contributing factor.

Lawrence Police Department spokesman David Ernst wrote in an email that at about 12:15 a.m., police officers responded to the head-on collision at the 2500 block of West Sixth Street, which is the area near Sixth and Crestline Drive. Ernst said preliminary information about the accident suggested that it happened when a westbound vehicle crossed the center line and collided with an eastbound vehicle.

The driver of the westbound vehicle was transported to an area hospital by ambulance with suspected minor injuries, Ernst wrote. Three occupants of the eastbound vehicle suffered suspected serious injuries and were transported by ambulance to an area hospital, Ernst wrote. In a later email on Saturday afternoon, Ernst said one of the occupants of the eastbound vehicle had died, but he did not provide any further information.

Emergency radio traffic at the time of the incident indicated that a 37-year-old man was transported to LMH Health for treatment of less serious injuries. Medics also transported a 52-year old woman to Overland Park Regional Medical Center with ankle and leg injuries, according to emergency radio traffic. They worked for about 20 minutes to extricate her from the vehicle.

Radio traffic indicated that an ambulance was also dispatched to Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka. Other details about the accident weren’t immediately available.

Ernst said LPD was investigating whether impaired driving contributed to the accident.
