A Kansas City man accused of a sex crime against a child was arrested by University of Kansas police on Saturday.

The man, Jorge Alberto Lozoya-Resendez, 25, of Kansas City, Kansas, was arrested on a warrant from Wyandotte County for aggravated indecent liberties with a child. He was originally charged on Nov. 23, 2021, according to the Douglas County Jail booking log.

Lozoya-Resendez was on campus when KU officers first encountered him; he was trying to get a ride to a homeless shelter, KU Deputy Chief James Druen said in an email.

An officer offered Lozoya-Resendez a ride but first ran his name for warrants, as is standard practice, Druen said. A warrant for his arrest was in the system from Wyandotte County, but the charges and extradition instructions were not available right away. While waiting for the information from Wyandotte County, the officer proceeded to take Lozoya-Resendez to the community building shelter at 115 W. 11th St. It was after 3 a.m. at the time.

The officer left Lozoya-Resendez at the shelter when he still hadn’t received the details of the warrant. The warrant information from Wyandotte County came back a short time later, and officers returned to the shelter, located Lozoya-Resendez and arrested him there, Druen said.

Lozoya-Resendez was released to Wyandotte County Jail and is being held on a $100,000 bond.
