A car’s security system alerted police and shut down an allegedly stolen vehicle early Wednesday morning in Eudora.

Daniel Hendrick Cantwell, 31, of Providence Forge, Virginia, faces charges in Douglas County District Court of one felony count of theft, one felony count of fleeing from police and one felony count of possession of methamphetamine, according to charging documents.

Eudora police were alerted around 1 a.m. to the theft of a 2020 GMC Acadia by the vehicle’s OnStar security system, said Eudora Police Chief Wes Lovett. An officer initiated a short pursuit before OnStar shut down the vehicle near the 2200 block of North 1420 Road. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident and no injuries were reported, Lovett said. Cantwell was booked into the Douglas County Jail around 1:40 a.m.

During Cantwell’s first appearance on Thursday, he was appointed defense attorney John Kerns and was given a $10,000 own-recognizance bond, according to court records. His next court appearance is on Jan. 11, 2023, for a status update. An own-recognizance bond means that Cantwell was not required to put up any money to bond out of jail but could be fined if he does not appear at his next court date.

The Journal-World has requested Cantwell’s booking photo from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
