Leg injury lands Lawrence police dog in early retirement

Patrol Service Dog, Deuce, retired from service with the Lawrence Police department in March 2022.

The Lawrence Police Department retired one of its patrol service dogs this week.

The dog, Deuce, is retiring after more than four years on the job because of a leg injury. The cause of the injury has not been determined, department spokesperson Laura McCabe told the Journal-World.

“The vet said Deuce likely worked through the leg injury and it became more evident as he aged,” McCabe said.

Deuce, a Belgian Malinois, is the first patrol service dog to retire from the department, and he leaves behind three other canine co-workers: Shadow, Cheeseburger and Mack. Deuce, however, will get to live with his human coworker, Officer Kevin Henderson, McCabe said.

McCabe said Deuce was born in 2014 and joined the department in 2017. He served alongside Henderson for his entire career with the Lawrence Police Department and played a part in a number of drug seizures and arrests, a Facebook post from the department said.

Deuce is expected to spend the rest of his days playing by the pool and sleeping on the bed with Henderson, the post said.
