Douglas County sheriff’s deputies on Friday apprehended two suspects after a foot chase through the University of Kansas campus.

The chase started a little after 1 p.m. when a deputy attempted to stop a green Honda Accord for failing to use a turn signal near the intersection of 10th and Missouri streets, said sheriff’s spokesperson George Diepenbrock.

The vehicle fled the scene and the deputy gave chase. The fleeing vehicle ran a stop sign before entering a neighborhood just west of campus where the deputy broke off the pursuit because of heavy pedestrian traffic, Diepenbrock said.

The car was relocated in the 1300 block of West Campus Road, abandoned by its occupants, who had fled on foot. Officers with the Lawrence Police Department and KU Public safety were able to assist in apprehending one suspect after a short foot pursuit on West Campus Road, Diepenbrock said.

The driver of the vehicle led officers on a foot pursuit to KU’s Memorial Stadium, where officers were able to stop and arrest him. Officers were not sure if there were only two people in the vehicle and searched the stadium to determine no one else had fled there, Diepenbrock said.

KU sent out an alert around 1:20 p.m. warning students about a possible armed suspect near the stadium during the incident, but the only firearm located was a BB gun in a backpack dropped by one of the suspects, Diepenbrock said. The university sent out an all-clear alert around 1:55 p.m.

The suspects, Clinton V. Dubray, 29, Lawrence, and Roger D. Helm, 29, Lawrence, were booked into the Douglas County Jail, both with outstanding warrants. No other details were immediately available Friday.

The Journal-World reported in June 2011 that Dubray was sentenced to more than three years in prison for attempted aggravated robbery and obstruction. Prosecutors accused Dubray, then 18, of using a gun on Feb. 26, 2011, to try to rob a 43-year-old man who was walking in the 1100 block of Tennessee Street.

Helm has served time in prison for various crimes, including theft, drug violations and making a criminal threat.
