Date set for hearing to determine whether Albert Wilson, convicted in Lawrence rape, should get new trial

Dates were set Wednesday for a hearing to determine whether a Wichita man serving more than 12 years in prison for a rape conviction will get a new trial.

Albert Wilson, now 24, was convicted of the 2016 rape of a 17-year-old girl in Lawrence. His appellate attorney successfully petitioned the Kansas Court of Appeals for a hearing to determine whether Wilson ought to receive a new trial based on ineffective assistance of counsel.

Wilson’s Van Cleave hearing — as it is called based on a 1986 Kansas Supreme Court case — will be held all day Thursday and Friday, June 4 and 5.

Wilson is currently an inmate of Hutchinson Correctional Facility, Kansas Department of Corrections records show. His earliest possible release date as his case stands currently is May 1, 2029.
