Motorcyclist seriously injured in wreck near 6th and Kentucky streets

A motorcyclist was flown to an area hospital with reported serious injuries after a crash Wednesday morning near downtown Lawrence.

Emergency responders were called to the area of Sixth Street between Kentucky and Tennessee streets at 11:09 a.m., according to radio traffic monitored by the Journal-World. Medics took the motorcyclist to a waiting helicopter at the Lawrence airport shortly before 11:30 a.m., radio traffic indicated.

Officers discovered that a motorcycle had been heading east on Sixth Street and rear-ended another vehicle, Lawrence Police Department spokesman Patrick Compton said via email Wednesday.

The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet, Compton said. The motorcyclist’s injuries appeared serious, but it was unknown if they were life-threatening as of early Wednesday afternoon, he said.

“We are still processing the accident scene, and we will provide more information as it becomes available,” Compton said.
