A recent member of the University of Kansas football team was arrested overnight after a woman reported that he pointed a gun at her on campus.

Kenny E. Bastida, 19, was arrested early Wednesday morning at Stouffer Place Apartments, 1835 Ousdahl Road, on suspicion of aggravated assault, aggravated battery and criminal damage to property, according to Douglas County Jail records.

A 19-year-old woman who is not a KU student reported to KU police that around 3 a.m. she was in a physical altercation with him at Stouffer Place, where he lives, Deputy Chief James Anguiano of the KU Office of Public Safety said in an email. During the altercation, the suspect pointed a gun at the woman, she told police.

The woman left the area and called police, Anguiano said. He said she reported being injured but refused medical attention.

As of Wednesday morning, charges against Bastida did not appear in Douglas County District Court records.

A 6-foot-1 linebacker out of Deerfield Beach High in Florida, Bastida ended up taking a redshirt season with the Jayhawks in 2018. He appeared in only four games, playing sparingly and mostly on special teams.

Bastida was on KU’s football roster throughout the spring but was not on the team at the time of his arrest.

Jim Marchiony, KU associate athletic director for public affairs, said Bastida has not been part of the KU football program since last month. Marchiony did not give a reason for Bastida leaving the team.
