A woman was recently convicted and sent to prison for shooting a man during a home-invasion robbery at a Lawrence apartment in December.
A total of four additional suspects have now been arrested and charged in connection with the same incident, the newest one being booked into the Douglas County Jail Wednesday night.
Michael R. Smith, 28, of Kansas City, Mo., was arrested on a warrant and held on $50,000 bond, according to jail records.
According to a complaint filed June 27 in Douglas County District Court, made public after Smith’s arrest, he is charged with one count of aggravated robbery for allegedly taking “personal property” from the victim while armed with a handgun and one count of aggravated battery for causing the victim great bodily harm.
Thursday morning, Smith had not yet been assigned his first court date.
The incident happened about 8:45 p.m. Dec. 20, 2017, at the victim’s apartment in the 4500 block of Wimbledon Drive. The man who was shot, 21 at the time, was flown to an area hospital but survived.
He told police that someone knocked at his apartment door and asked for “Tim,” and he said they must have the wrong house, the Journal-World previously reported. Then someone said “run that (expletive)” and a group of suspects with handguns barged in, with some holding him and his girlfriend on the first floor while others searched upstairs.
The victim told police that the suspect who actually shot him was very short and went by “Tink.”
Kayshunna C. Poindexter, 26, of Lawrence, aka “Tink,” got a plea deal in part by agreeing to cooperate in the prosecution of the other suspects, her attorney said at her sentencing earlier this month. Poindexter was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison, after pleading no contest to aggravated battery.
In addition to newly arrested Smith, the others arrested and charged in the robbery are Jermel Fleming, 25, of Grandview, Mo.; Brian L. Proctor, 26, of Lawrence; and Brian L. Smith, 30, of Kansas City, Mo.
