KU to consolidate a pair of foreign language departments; phasing out German Studies degree
The University of Kansas is consolidating a pair of its foreign language departments.
In July, the Department of Slavic and Eurasian Languages & Literatures and the Department of German Studies will merge. The new department, which will be housed in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences will be called the Department of Slavic, German & Eurasian Studies.
KU didn’t provide details in a press release about why it was merging the two departments. However, the merger comes at a time when university leaders have been looking to consolidate or eliminate programs as KU seeks to address budget concerns and become more efficient.
The new department will offer a single degree that covers all the languages. That degree — a Bachelor of Arts in Slavic, German and Eurasian studies — will offer concentrations in Russian, German, Polish, South Slavic and Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies.
Students who currently are earning a degree in German Studies will be able to finish that degree; however, a specific German Studies degree won’t be offered to new students.
