Storms expected to give way to mild, dry weather for remainder of holiday weekend

Lawrence has received a little more than 3 inches of rain since Thursday morning, but the National Weather Service is forecasting a lovely end to Labor Day weekend.

Chelsea Picha, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Topeka, said 3.02 inches of rain have been recorded at Lawrence Municipal Airport since a series of thunderstorms started on Thursday. She said 1.5 inches fell from 7 a.m. Thursday through midnight Friday, and about the same amount fell on Saturday.

Some areas of Lawrence may have gotten more rain than the airport weather station recorded, Picha said. She said there were reports of as much as 2 inches of rainfall on Saturday in parts of Lawrence.

The good news is that rain will not continue to dampen the holiday weekend, Picha said. She said the storm system was expected to clear the area on Saturday afternoon, and that it would give way to a period of mild, dry weather for the rest of the holiday weekend and the upcoming week.

The forecast for Sunday calls for clear skies and a high in the low 80s. Then, the afternoon high will warm to the mid-80s on Labor Day under clear skies. The overnight low will be in the low 60s, Picha said.

“The rest of the week through Friday looks pretty similar,” she said.

With the recent rainfall, the amount of rain recorded this year at Lawrence Municipal Airport rose to 37.42 inches, Picha said. That is 11.12 inches more than normal for this time of year, she said.
