The Lawrence Arts Center has closed and all programming suspended until the end of the month because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The center’s building closed at the end of the day Saturday and will remain closed through March 29 to help prevent the spread of the new coronavirus, COVID-19, according to an announcement from CEO Margaret Weisbrod Morris. The closure was the result of a recommendation from the Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health Department.

The closure affects all classes, events and activities. The announcement said that the center’s priority has always been the well-being of artists, staff, students, families and visitors.

“We are a community organization; because of that each and every person in our community is important to us,” Weisbrod Morris said in the announcement. “This will always inform the decisions we make, especially now as we navigate through this national emergency.”

The center intends to resume its schedule on March 30 unless told otherwise by health officials. Announcements for make-up dates will be made as soon as possible, the center said.
