Three Lawrence-area first responders trained for months in preparation for an annual boxing fundraiser, and one of them brought home a championship belt.
Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputy Charlie Cooper won her match against Tracey Mauna, a Clay County, Mo., juvenile officer, on Saturday, Oct. 26.
Guns N Hoses, an annual charity event, pits area law enforcement officers against firefighters in boxing matches to raise money for the Kansas City Crime Commission’s Surviving Spouse and Family Endowment Fund, or SAFE. The foundation provides immediate assistance to the families of Kansas City metro-area first responders who die in the line of duty.
Tyree Clark, a corrections officer with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, and James Davis, a Tonganoxie firefighter, both lost their fights in decisions.
“Tough fights for them both but they made me proud with their progress and their heart to get in there,” coach Daniel Barajas said.
