Workweek to start with bitter cold temperatures

Lawrence and Douglas County are in store for bitter cold temperatures following the latest in a series of winter storms to visit the area this season.

Shawn Byrne, of the National Weather Service Office in Topeka, said about four inches of snow fell in Lawrence from about 2 to 8 a.m. Sunday. The snow is the last moisture the area will see until at least late Wednesday or early Thursday, but the frigid temperatures that accompanied the cold front will continue through Monday and Tuesday, he said.

The workweek will start Monday morning with the windchill dipping to between 7 and 17 below zero. Afternoon highs will remain in the teens, he said. Tuesday will be a bit warmer, but still cold, with morning windchills from 1 to 9 below zero. Afternoon highs are forecast to warm up to the upper 20s.

The snow that fell Sunday was light and fluffy and not the kind that causes power line or tree limb concerns, despite the 20 mph winds that accompanied the storm, Byrne said. On Sunday, the Westar Energy power outage map indicated no outages in Lawrence or Douglas County. Emergency dispatch reports indicated no noticeable increase of accidents on Sunday.

With a season’s worth of experience of coping with winter weather, Lawrence drivers handled the latest storm with few problems despite snow-packed streets.

A warming trend will start on Wednesday, with afternoon highs expected in the upper 30s, Byrne said. There is a chance of rain or wintry mix from Wednesday evening through Saturday, but with daytime highs warming from the upper 30s on Wednesday to the 50s on Saturday, any daytime hour moisture will be in the form of rain, he said.
