The area of Sixth Street marked with a blue line will be reduced to one-lane traffic in each direction through mid July 2024, the city has announced.

Sixth Street, already heavily under construction, is now a bit more restricted after city crews found a significant underground problem.

The portion of Sixth Street between Monterey Way and Eldridge Street was reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction on Wednesday morning and is expected to remain that way into next month. Additionally, those two lanes are side by side, meaning traffic is traveling nearly head-to-head on one side of the road, the city of Lawrence said via a news release Wednesday morning.

The new traffic restriction comes as the city identified a large void underneath the street that needs repair. The repair will require the replacement of about 80 feet of storm sewer in the area.

The city is estimating the one-lane traffic situation will last until July 15.
