Officers with the Lawrence Police Department will conduct a sobriety check lane Friday at an undisclosed time and location within the city.
The check lane is a tool to increase awareness about the dangers of impaired driving and get impaired drivers off the street, a news release from LPD said. Officers will look for signs of impairment and perform field sobriety testing on motorists who show signs of alcohol and/or drug consumption.
LPD said preliminary data from 2024 showed that 83 people died and more than 1,100 people in Kansas were injured in crashes involving an alcohol-impaired driver.
Impaired driving can lead to jail time, driving privileges being restricted or revoked, monthly fees associated with an ignition interlock and higher insurance rates. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the average cost of a DUI is $10,000.
