Instead of a wall, Van Go’s new mural for the Senior Resource Center will hit the streets

Artists with Van Go's spring JAMS program cut the ribbon to celebrate the unveiling of "Regenerations," their mural project for the Senior Resource Center.

A new mural unveiled by artists with arts-based nonprofit Van Go Thursday is a bit different from the projects they typically complete each spring — it’s not going to be installed on a wall but on a vehicle.

Titled “Regenerations,” the mural will be printed on vinyl and wrapped around one of the Senior Resource Center’s accessible vans. Along with portraits of smiling senior citizens, the artwork also depicts representations of connection — like a bridge crossing the Kansas River — and landmarks from across Lawrence and Douglas County.

The final iteration of the mural is set to be unveiled May 25 as part of the Art Tougeau parade.

Each year, apprentice artists with the social service agency’s JAMS program for 14- to 18-year-olds craft a mural in partnership with another local agency. During this session, 19 artists were involved in the program.

One of them was Ru Yother, who has worked for Van Go across four different program sessions and was the team leader for the “Regenerations” project.

“I think this experience has been very special and important,” Yother said at Thursday’s unveiling. “The spring mural is a team project, and I think it definitely teaches one to have patience. … This spring was definitely one to remember.”

Along with Yother, the other apprentice artists with the JAMS program this spring included Keira Albin, Ayo Beason, Barack Bennett-Robinson, Darius Calkins, Jayliana Covarrubias, Dexter Dillingham, Eden Faust, Mariah Flanagan, Jay Foster, Lexie Hood, Gavin Monse, Kate Nau, Ro O’Leary, Stevie Pfeifer, Simn Robinson, Tayton Stands, Anamaria Taylor and Nathan Townley.
