The Lawrence City Commission will not meet for its regularly scheduled meeting this coming Tuesday.

The commission typically meets the first three Tuesdays of the month, but last month voted to cancel the June 13 meeting because two members of the governing body, Mayor Lisa Larsen and Commissioner Amber Sellers, will not be present for the meeting. Both will be attending conferences next week.

Larsen will be attending the 2023 Social Equity Leadership Conference Program in Kansas City, Missouri, from June 12 to 14. Sellers will be attending the summer conference of the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials in Jackson, Mississippi, from June 13 to 16.

The Social Equity Leadership Conference will focus on putting social equity policy, practices and processes into action, according to a memo to the commission. The program has over 24 panels and 80 presentations from academics and civil servants across the nation “to reflect and inspire action.” The National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials brings African-American municipal leaders together to form connections, share best practices and explore issues.

The commission included funding for Larsen and Sellers to attend the conferences in its 2023 budget, with costs being $607 and $1,960, respectively.

The commission’s next meeting will be on June 20.
