Haskell Indian Nations University is set to host a traffic safety event Thursday, meant to educate students about the dangers of driving while impaired or distracted.

The event is set to run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Haskell’s campus in the Student Union, 155 E. Indian Ave. From noon to 12:30 p.m., speakers from the U.S. and Kansas departments of transportation, the Bureau of Indian Affairs’ Indian Highway Safety Program and Haskell will give remarks.

Throughout the event, there will be interactive booths sponsored by partner highway safety organizations including activities like child passenger safety seat checks and car seat distribution and a simulated impaired driving experience.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, about 32 people in the U.S. die each day in drunk-driving crashes. And in 2020, more than 11,600 people died as a result of alcohol-impaired driving, a 14% increase from 2019.
