A local group concerned about possible school closings is planning a series of events this week to highlight how some of the proposed closings would affect students’ walking routes to school.
The group, Save Our Schools, is planning four walks between Lawrence schools as part of its “Walk in Their Shoes” events, according to a news release from the group. The release states that the events are being held to better understand potential challenges and hazards that a pedestrian would encounter should some of the closures be realized.
“The walks are designed to help community members and educators experience what elementary students would encounter during their walk to school, which could be up to 2.5 miles,” the release states.
The groups will also collect data along their routes, including the number of crosswalks, estimated number of cars, intensity of traffic, weather conditions and total time of the commute. Details regarding the four events, which begin Monday, are as follows:
•Monday 3:30 p.m.: Schwegler Elementary to Broken Arrow Elementary
•Wednesday 7 a.m.: Liberty Memorial Central Middle School to Woodlawn Elementary
•Thursday 7 a.m.: Liberty Memorial Central Middle School to Woodlawn Elementary
•Friday 7 a.m.: Liberty Memorial Central Middle School to Woodlawn Elementary
The Lawrence school district has been discussing various options to address a multimillion-dollar budget shortfall, including the possibility of closing some schools. One scenario would involve closing Broken Arrow, New York, Woodlawn and Pinckney elementary schools and consolidating those students at what is now Liberty Memorial Central Middle School. Another option discussed has been closing Broken Arrow and moving those students to Schwegler.
