KU sanctions Kappa Sigma fraternity, gives two years’ probation

Kappa Sigma fraternity at 1045 Emery Road on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014.

Kansas University put Kappa Sigma fraternity on probation for two years after finding that it violated the Student Code of Rights and Responsibilities, the university said in a news release Wednesday afternoon.

The sanctions follow an investigation of reports of sexual assault at the fraternity on homecoming weekend in late September and are in addition to investigations of individual members, the university said.

  • The university said the sanctions imposed as part of Kappa Sigma’s probation include:
  • No alcohol in the chapter house
  • A requirement that the fraternity turn over to the university materials related to its internal investigation that can be legally provided
  • A requirement that all members report any suspected sexual assault or harassment to the university, with individuals and/or the fraternity as a whole being subject to sanctions if they fail to report
  • Multiple, mandatory sexual assault and harassment prevention and education trainings for all members over the course of 2015 and 2016.

Failure to meet the conditions will result in more sanctions for the fraternity, the university said. The university did not rule out additional sanctions for individual students.
