Wichita man accused of inappropriately touching girl tells Douglas County judge he did it
A 38-year-old Wichita man who was charged with inappropriately touching a 10-year-old Lawrence girl told a judge he was guilty during his Tuesday afternoon first appearance.
The man through a Spanish language interpreter in court told judge-pro tem James George he was guilty of the charge and said he had made a mistake. But George quickly cut the man off and told him the hearing was not to determine his guilt or innocence.
Lawrence police arrested the man Monday evening after the girl’s mother had alleged to officers that the suspect, her boyfriend, had molested her daughter at a residence on Sunday. The girl had talked to her mother after the alleged incident occurred, police said.
Assistant Douglas County District Attorney James McCabria said the alleged offense occurred at the Easy Living Mobile Home Park, in the 3300 block of Iowa. Prosecutors filed one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child against the man Tuesday.
George appointed an attorney for the man and set his bond at $150,000 cash or surety. The man said in court he had been given a place to stay while working in Lawrence. McCabria also said U.S. Immigration and Customs has a hold on the man’s immigration status.
George ordered the man to not have contact with the girl or any other witnesses if he posts bond, and he set a hearing for 2 p.m. May 24.
