Westar welfare?
To the editor:
Energy efficiency is now all the rage; it is a very wise thing to do. Having said that, could our zeal be distracting us from our native common sense?
Westar Energy wants to charge each and every one of us to preserve their revenue when we use less energy. We make the financial and lifestyle sacrifices to reduce our energy use by making our homes and our footprint more sustainable. Revenues to Westar would likely decrease as a result. They want that revenue stream preserved. Where is it written that corporations see revenue increases even when sales decline? Shades of corporate welfare!
Back in the 19th century when the “snake oil” salesman came to town, we knew what to do: tar and feathers and a rail out of town. Perhaps we should consider doing that metaphorically to the Westar executives demanding our money to preserve their revenues — and there is not even any “snake oil.” Lawrence has never been known to be shy when it comes to corporate welfare. Your action!
