Weighty find
To the editor:
“Enormous meteorite found on Kansas farmland” (Nov. 12) is unquestionably a spectacular find. But the carryover headline, “Meteorite among largest ever found” is somewhat misleading. At 1,400 pounds this space object is much smaller than some other meteorites.
The largest known is the Hoba iron, which lies half-buried on a farm near the Namibian town of Grootfountain in southwestern Africa. It measures more than 9 by 9 by 3 feet and weighs an estimated 66 tons. Another huge one is the Ahnigito iron from Greenland, now in the American Museum of Natural History in New York. It weighs 34 tons.
