My Sunday Morning Guilty Pleasure

What’s the first thing you read when you bring in your Sunday Journal-World off the stoop? Do you read the front page headlines, the comics, classifieds, obits, or do you go right for what I call “the guts” of the paper — the insert ads?

For me there’s nothing better early Sunday morning than to get the coffee going and open up the paper while my family is still deep in slumber.

And so begins my Sunday ritual . . .

While waiting for my coffee to brew, I flip through the paper and glance at the front page of each section. I make a mental note of stories that interest me to read later. Then I reach in and grab the “guts.” Oh yeah. All mine. I settle into my favorite chair and immerse myself into one of my guilty pleasures.

It may sound crazy, but I also have a certain order in which I read the ads. I start with ads I really don’t think I’ll be shopping, but still must go through, you know, just so I don’t miss anything. I save my favorites (Target, Walgreens, CVS, Michaels, Kohl’s and the coupons) for last.

Once the rest of the family gets up, they hunt for other ads, such as Best Buy, Hastings and Dick’s Sporting Goods, among others.

Each week varies and some weeks are better than others, but I always look forward to the anticipation of finding a great deal.

This week the Michaels ad in particular has me thinking I need to pick back up on a craft I started some time ago — beading. I see they have 50% off on their Bead Gallery Collection. Also on sale are other jewelry making beads, pendants, crystals, etc. at 2/$5.

The ad is still pushing fall items at 40%-70% off.

What I also like about Michaels is that they will offer free crafting classes. Today (10/25) from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., you can participate in a Halloween T-shirt decorating event. You supply the T-shirt (advertised 2/$5) and Michaels supplies the paint. Could be fun for the kids.
