Lawrence Police are investigating after one person was shot early this morning.

The incident was reported around 1:25 Sunday morning in the 2300 block of Murphy Drive, just southeast of 23rd and Iowa in central Lawrence.

Initial reports indicated that the shooter called police to report that he had just shot a subject that was attempting to break into his vehicle.

Dispatchers say they received numerous 911 calls reporting gunshots heard in the area. Lawrence Police Department's call log show 18 units were assigned to the call.

The shooting victim, only described as a 20-year-old man, ran from the scene and was located by police in the 2300 block of Ridge Court.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews report the shooting victim's injuries to be serious and not immediately life-threatening. He reportedly has wounds on his right side, including his shoulder and arm. Medics transported the man to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Witnesses tell Operation 100 News that they heard three shotgun blasts, which were fired from a second floor apartment. The shotgun is said to have been firing birdshot shells.

That's why the bird shot shells might save him, he can say he was not going to (seriously) harm anyone.

But my gun using friend will all say the same thing, why have a gun if it's not loaded?

Don't quote me, but an individual CAN use deadly force to protect his or is family's life or property if said person/individual feels that either are in imminent danger.

jafs 4 years, 10 months ago

Not property.

One can use deadly force in defense of life, but not of property. And, depending on the state, there may be more involved than "feels in danger". Sometimes one must have a "reasonable fear", and/or not have other options.

Most states allow for use of deadly force if one's home is invaded, but it's because there's a presumption of danger to yourself - it's not so that you can kill somebody who wants to steal your stereo.

For sure there were three shots, we don't live far and heard it. He didn't run far so guess the bird shot worked. Judging by how the cops and detectives are still taking pics and I never heard a report of medic 5 going to LMH, I'm thinking he will never try that again.

...and in other news, his five buddies who were also breaking into cars around town that night have decided that they will no longer break into cars.

18 units sent to this call. I didn't know Lawrence even had 18 units. Didn't imagine that many being on duty on a Saturday night. I think we are getting a drug problem in Lawrence. Are there organized gangs or is this just some punks breaking into cars?

Smarmy_Schoolmarm 4 years, 10 months ago

Getting a drug problem? You're trying to be ironic, right?

Was there collateral damage?...........seems there should be from a SHOTGUN!.........Fired from the 2nd FLOOR!.............HUH!

Jstanobservation 4 years, 10 months ago

Probably didn't do the paint on his car any good if the perp was standing in front of it.

Nothing is ever going to get better until after the big boys duke it out at Meggido.

Let's see, as far as I can tell, the shooter did what our esteemed Vice President said to do; step out onto the balcony (or maybe from a window if there was not a balcony) and fire two (although 3 were reported) blasts from a shotgun to scare away the bad guys.

bearded_gnome 4 years, 10 months ago

our idiocracy vice president gave advice: ineffectual; illegal. in this case, the shotgun shooter did stop the perp.

maybe a law requiring all lawrence residents to own birdshot shotguns is in order to take a bite outa crime?

greenworld 4 years, 10 months ago

Or maybe the police should do their jobs so the citizens don't have to.

jafs 4 years, 10 months ago

I was surprised to learn that in KS, you can actually use force to deter property crime.

So, this guy may be operating within the law, in fact.

Mike Frizzell 4 years, 10 months ago

The Lawrence Journal-World is now reporting that the shooter has been charged with attempted second-degree murder.

jafs 4 years, 10 months ago

I saw that, and am now thoroughly confused.

If it's ok to use force to dissuade property crime, and that's what this guy did, why is he being charged like this? From what I've read, he used bird shot or some such thing rather than bullets, so attempted murder seems like a stretch.
