What happened with the Casino's bringing in the revenue to help with the School Funding? Where did/dos that go?
tigerarmy247 4 months ago
See and there in lies the problem. I only support this because selfishly my wife is an educator and I see her struggles daily with inadequate funding. However, I recognize all the downsides to this proposal and would much prefer that income taxes went back up (or even a bit higher) and that money be used to fund education.

Hey Coach, I don't think she said that at all. She wants more funding to have the things that students need in the classroom. Educational funding isn't only for salaries and the lack of funds hurt the students more than the faculty.

Of course you're right, but some people have to misinterpret or they've got nothing.

Browny should just leave things be to be done by qualified people.
oletimer 3 months ago
if that was the case, he never would have been governor. he was elected by the anti-abortion head cases, and basically that is all he has done, is kiss them. he is busy screwing the rest of Kansas

If you think the good old gov is going to use turnpike money for education, I want some of what ever your drinking. It will go to whatever the Koch Brothers tell him.

The turnpike was supposed to be paid off years ago!

I may be wrong, but I think it was and then it was supposed to be a free road. I could be wrong and I'm sure someone will tell me if I am.

ABOUT KTA
MAINTENANCE, SERVICE & SAFETY
KTA makes repairs and upgrades on a consistent basis in order to keep the roadway in a sound and safe condition. Those investments are funded through tolls and proceeds from revenue bond issues. Ultimately, toll revenue from Turnpike customers funds all operating and bond debt-service costs. The Turnpike contracts with business partners for the operations at six service areas. These partners provide fuel, food and other products and services expected by today’s travelers.
A few of the Turnpike’s safety features include:
median barrier to prevent crossover accidents limited access to reduce merging traffic 47 uniformed Highway Patrol Troopers rumble strips on both the inside and outside shoulders, as well as prior to three mainline toll plazas
NET TOLL REVENUE (2011) $84.3 million

From what I have been able to learn it sounds to me like they pretty much do the same thing, so I think they should be merged. It seems redundant to me to have both since one is repeating the other.

Why use the money for schools? We already ship 75% of our taxes there and they're still whining - and apparently not even teaching reading any more.
rvjayhawk 4 months ago
I agree. We have some wonderful public school teachers. Unfortunately we also have an awful lot of lousy ones, but thanks to teachers unions we can't get rid of any of them. The only way to improve our public schools is to 1. get rid of teacher unions and 2. get the federal government out education.

The problem we now face is a lack of credibility because the right wing does not understand the importance of trust in government. Nothing good can happen when there is no trust.
These people believe in machiavelli and power politics.

There may be justification for merging the two entities. However, Brownback has done a piss poor job of presenting the case for a merger. As for funding schools with highway money, that is just STUPID. I think we need to have a government stupidity task for politicians. Everything they say or do something stupid, they pay this tax and it goes to funding the schools. Something tells me that our schools would get adequate funding just from such a tax -- at least until the politicians smartened up.
verity 4 months ago
Fantastic idea! It would fund us at least until the next election.

All we care about is how much the tolls will be, and how well the road will be maintained. Given how desparate the state is for $, is there ANYONE that believes we'll be better off in those two areas if K-DOT takes over the KTA?

Hey Folks, be prepared. both houses in Kansas and the Govenor office are controlled by the same party. First time since 1964, So guess what, what ever the govenor wishes for will happen. So prepare yourself for the ride.
jhawk1998 3 months ago
I have a better idea. Close the toll booths and terminate the KTA. I paid $1.75 just to drive to kcmo today and 12 bucks last week to see family in Wichita. Roads have been paid for years ago. Ridiculous.
