Password? We don't need no stinking passwords!
RoeDapple 1 year, 8 months ago
Mostly I forget them, especially the ones for online accounts. Then I go through the process of getting a new one, only to forget it by the time I need it again. I like nice easy ones like BR549. Makes my kid pull her hair out. Hers usually look like this; As43gMM09cd??Qyb88efdJ6-r7xV99. She has a different one for everything she does and changes them weekly. . . Aaaarrrgggggg!! . . Hey! I think I just created my next new password!

Just me and a few Sysadmins.
SWGlassPit 1 year, 8 months ago
In most sane security setups, not even the sysadmins have access to your password. Passwords are usually encrypted before they are stored, using a one-way hash function. That means it is essentially impossible to recover the plaintext password, even if given the hashed password and the hashing algorithm. When you enter your password, your entry is hashed, and the password hashes are compared. Unfortunately, not all security setups are in fact sane, so you may actually be right.

What do you mean, "sane security setups"?
You're not going to be able to scam very much money off your website if you set it up so that you can't look up passwords!

Shouldn't the question read "passwordS"? Between various systems at work and online accounts at home, I probably have a hundred or so, all different.

This is an excellent way to develop a very good password: Make a permutation of the VIN number of a certain car, if you know exactly what it is. For example, a very good way to find one to start with is to use the VIN of a car that you really like on cars.com but can't afford, such as a very nice Rolls Royce or Ferrari. The VIN numbers are always listed in the advertisement. I've been told that a permutation of the VIN number of an unknown car is an excellent password.
But you have to have the knack of remembering it. And, because they are very long and almost all systems have a character length limit on passwords, you will have to start at some random point within that unknown car's VIN number and probably also end it somewhere within it before you begin your permutation.
I'm quite sure no one will ever figure it out so I think that would be just about as good as a totally random one, but it has the advantage of being something that you can look up later if you save it in a very odd place. But, you will have to remember where you began your permutation at and where it ended, and also remember exactly what your permutation was.
Good luck trying to figure that one out!

Just me, but I write them on the back of my legal pad in case I forget them, so just look there if you need to know what they are

Having helped on an estate, it was a lot easier when one brother had a list of assets, debts and account passwords for the other. I have given a short list of passwords to my best friend and she has agreed to delete my special private blog about my husband's faults.

Does your husband have the password to your private personal blog that has your best friend's faults?
gccs14r 1 year, 8 months ago
If you want someone to handle your online accounts after your demise, place them either with your estate attorney or in a safe deposit box that someone else has access to.
