I voted B.

I agree with jihad, it would have been an A a year ago.

But anyone saying worse than a B needs to look at where KU Athletics was 8 years ago before Perkins took over. Yes, some bad stuff happened recently, but the good thins Perkins did still far outweigh the bad.

Yup - the ends justify the means - regardless of how manipulative, scheming, coniving, illegal, self-serving, mean-spirited, and underhanded they are.

Ricky_Vaughn 7 years, 8 months ago

A? You've lost scholarships, endured academic and ethics violations, and currently have the FBI breathing down your neck....all on Lew's watch.

Ricky_Vaughn 7 years, 8 months ago

Keep in mind he didn't hire Mangino OR Self.

milehighhawk 7 years, 8 months ago

Keep in mind he doubled the budget of the athletics department, improved facilities across the board, and allowed KU to be competitive in every single sport.

Increased funding for KU Athletics: A+ Maintained/enhanced relations with donors: B- Relations with faculty: D Academics: B (thanks to Assoc. AD Paul Buskirk) Integrity and character: D Reputation for building winning programs: Men's basketball: A- (inherited a great program and coach) Football: Incomplete (probably will convert to an "F" over time) Women's basketball: D Baseball: C+ Other men's sports: C Other women's sports: B- Major coaching hires: Bonnie Henrickson: C- Turner Gill: Incomplete (Who hired Rich Price and Mark Francis? Perkins or Al Bohl?) Getting more dough than anyone deserves: A+

Ricky_Vaughn 7 years, 8 months ago

I'm pretty sure Bohl hired Price, since he's already had 3 of his sons come through the program. Not sure about Francis.

you forgot the killing of swimming and men's tennis.

overthemoon 7 years, 8 months ago

Don't think so. First thing he did when he walked in the door. Women's swimming was axed as well, so don't think it was T IX

Vinny1 7 years, 8 months ago

Title IX effectively killed both those sports. And it was actually done before Lew got here.

It was either kill mens swimming and tennis or add multiple women's sports to equate the scholarships. So either lose money on 2 more programs, or axe 2 of the money losing programs. Easy decision for any AD.

Football: Incomplete (probably will convert to an "F" over time) ??

You do realize the monumental task he had getting us in the Orange Bowl right? That was nothing short of a miracle.

He didn't hire Bill or Mangino but he sure as hell provided them with money to help make them more successful.

KU_cynic 7 years, 8 months ago

Former coach Mark Mangino was hired by Al Bohl and had icey relations with Lew Perkins throughout his tenure here. Through skill or luck (and weak out-of-conference schedules) Mangino and his staff brought KU football to a performance peak that will probably be unmatched for quite a long time.

Perhaps Perkins deserves credit for scheduling creampuff non-conference opponents that allowed KU's W-L record to look a lot better than its power-ranking record, perhaps squeezing KU into some prominence that was ephemeral.

Perhaps Perkins deserves credit for not firing Mangino in spite of his boorish behavior toward players and staff, allowing KU to enjoy some coaching stability and football success.

Perhaps Perkins deserves credit for raising some cash from soon-to-be-disgraced alumnus Tom Kivisto, cash that may not ever be collected, however.

True credit for football would have been evidenced by 1) successful Gridiron Club fund raising; 2) getting rid of Mangino before he got out-of-control or otherwise managing his behavior; 3) creating a culture of permanent football sellouts; and 4) quickly returning to winning seasons under Turner Gill (we'll see, hence the "Incomplete").

I am not sure if I can vote, is there some kind of point system or other fee to KUAI which I need to pay before I am allowed to vote? Am I possibly infringing on some intellectual property rights that I may be required to pony-up for?

BorderRuffian 7 years, 8 months ago

Just wait until all the indictments come out. hehehehehehehe

Lew Perkins was one of the major contributors in re-focusing the university from its mistaken role in education into its more appropriate roll focused on basketball and football. I give him a D because he wasn't the only contributor to this fundamental collapse of university ethics.

Jeff Cuttell 7 years, 8 months ago

Anyone wonder why he leaves a year early and the next day someone involved in the ticket scandel wants to delay his sentence? Maybe Lew had a little more to hide that is coming out now and needed to take off before he gets named in this. Stay tuned.
