Many many neighborhoods throughout the KCMO/JOCO have 25 mph speed limits. Believe me they are enforced so I discovered.
Mass. is 30 but 35 to 40 is more common. I'm "comfortable" with the limit but not the actual speed being driven.
No - people cut through my little street and go way too fast. There are children who play on this street and I am always so afraid one of them are going to get hit. People also walk down my street often. It just an accident waiting to happen. I'd like to see speed bumps on both end of our street.
From another site:
"Researchers have known for years that when it comes to safety, speed limits should be set at the 85th percentile traffic flow speed. The reality is that most drivers move along at what they consider to be a safe speed for the conditions regardless of the posted limit. To minimize accidents, the limit should therefore be the speed at which 85 percent of the drivers are moving. "
I'm sure most of you would call it a slippery slope, but I think that,
Mass = 35mph
Northbound Iowa after 27th = 40mph the entire way
6th st = between 40mph-45mph, no more 35mph
Kasold btwn 15th and 31st = 45mph
I think the posted speed limit is fine. I think the people that fly down the street not ADHERING to the posted speed limit is the problem!
Speed bumps are reasonably present on many KCMO/JOCO neighborhood streets as well.
Keep in mind that people will likely drive 5MPH over the posted limit and will never be busted.
The 85th percentile is merely a guideline not an absolute therefore many other aspects need to be considered.
Is the road designed for greater speed?
Is the condition of the road appropriate for greater speed?
How much residential is located along the route?
School crossings along the route?
Etc etc etc.
Is tailgating safe?
We need more speed bumps, stop signs, and lights. This town won't be safe to drive in until there's a round about at every intersection with stop signs for every entrance and speed bumps to make sure these hooligans don't kill everyone in sight.
Also, every major road should change speed limit at least once a mile, that way nobody ever knows what the speed limit is, including the law enforcement. We need crossing guards at every crosswalk and a cop with a radar gun under every speed limit sign making sure nobody is traveling that deadly 5 over I've heard so much about.
This is the only way I'll be able to sleep at night knowing that there will still be accidents, people will die, and it'll take everybody 20 minutes to drive across this little town because irresponsible drivers will still exist, no matter how regulated traffic is.
Don't forget, merrill recommends potholes as traffic-calming devices.
Ideally, we'd just have people-cannons and big padded landing areas instead of streets
random pop-up roundabouts
I live on the corner of a 'chip and seal' road in rural Doug Co. The speed limit is 30, but few pay attention to it. My mailbox has been run over at least 10 times, and I once dug the chevron 'Chevrolet' grill emblem out of the bark of the ancient oak in the yard. I've witnessed police chases, sometimes with as many as 5 LE agencies, twice with helicopter assist. If provided a schedule I could set up bleachers and sell tickets. In '69 I even . . um . . participated.
I live on Connecticut Street and the speed limit is 30 and that is just fine with me but no one drives it. Also no one know how to use a four way stop.
On my block of Pennsylvania street (designated as the worst paved block in town a while back) the 30MPH default speed limit is about as fast as most cars can survive it. . .
Speeding? Good luck! Seems I'm always stuck behind some jerkoff who can't manage to maintain 30 mph, or whatever the limit may be.
Seriously, it isn't difficult to go the speed limit, so just do it already and please don't take too much time to accelerate, you are only holding up traffic when you do that.
I'm cool w/ it. I live around the corner from a school, so 30mph isn't bad. Maybe they should lower it to 25mph, but i'm not complaining.
I think there should be a speed bump on some of the curves on Emery, especially getting close to 9th street. Stupid frat boys always fly around those steep curves.
The speed limit is fine. The acceleration rate for rice burners and Harley's is not.
Someone needs to muffle the crap out of the white trash autos/motorcycles now that we have legislated the hell out of "people" who turn their base too loud.
