Older, larger Sardines are also known as Herring. However, I'm not sure if Herring canned in red hot sauce are know as "Red Herring" :<)

My mother use to eat those nasty smelly things and loved them. Swedish eat them alot - delicacy with boiled potatos. Just could never get use to the smell. But they were a big item back in my Mother's day - in the lunch pails and military grub as well. Doesn't surprise me they are closing down. Our ocean are being depleted of everything, crab, lobster, shrimp, clams, osysters. They've been over harvested. I imagine alot has been just wasted. I use to crab as a youngster and catch really big crabs, now the crabs are almost half the size they use to be and they are harvesting females which use to be against the law. By the time my grandchildren are adults there won't be seafood to eat unless somehow it is synthectically made. Sad :o(
Al Gore was intrumental in closing down the last sardine cannery in the United States since all sardine lovers know they contribute to global warming in a ghastly way.

I like them when rubbed on a wooden bowl when making a caesar's salad from scratch. That's it.

I've never had one but not sure I would like them. I used to think that about anchovies, though. Turned out I liked them, but not something I'd want everyday. I really like them once in a while on a really thin crust pizza.
