A crash investigation team with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office examines the site of a fatal crash just east of the intersection of 31st and Louisiana streets Wednesday, April 24, 2024.

A 37-year old Lawrence man was killed in a Wednesday afternoon vehicle crash near the intersection of 31st and Louisiana streets in Lawrence, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has announced.

Michael Landsness died from injuries that resulted from a crash involving his 2008 Kia Sportage and a 2017 Ford F-150, the sheriff’s office said in a media release Thursday afternoon.

Authorities determined that Landsness’ vehicle drove into oncoming traffic Wednesday afternoon and struck the pickup truck. The accident occurred just east of 31st and Louisiana streets, in the 1400 block of North 1300 Road.

A passenger in the Kia — Coty Galbreath, 34, of Kansas City, Mo, — suffered serious injuries and was flown to a Kansas City-area hospital. As of Thursday afternoon, he remained hospitalized.

A driver and passenger in the Ford F-150 were taken by ground ambulance to an area hospital. Both have been treated and released.

A preliminary crash investigation has determined that the Kia was traveling westbound at high speed before crossing the center line and striking the pickup head-on as it traveled in the inside eastbound lane, the sheriff’s office said in a release.
