I'll never forget what our family's insurance agent told me when my father took me to see him the day I got my license:

"In the eyes of the insurance industry, you, as a 16-year-old male, have already had an accident. That's because many more 16-year-old males get into accidents than there are 16-year-old males in this country. So be VERY careful and don't think it won't happen to you."

I was a smart, fairly clean-cut kid. I knew it wouldn't happen to me. A little over a month later, I totaled my mother's car.

my mother used to tell people that if I got bored I would roll my car. Selective memory says it isn't so...

I hadn't been driving for more than a year before I had an accident. Luckily for my insurance rates, it was the other guy's fault -- he failed to yield the right-of-way at a two-way stop and T-boned me.

He was a 15-year-old on a learner's permit... running late for a court appearance down the street. Somehow I got the feeling he'd not be getting a license for quite a while.

I was 18 and it was Memorial Day weekend 1998. I was coming home from work and this woman in a Ford pick up decided at the last second to turn right in front of me and BAM! I was less than one mile from home. The air bag went off and my arms burned from the powder in the bag. My knee was swelling and I couldn't feel anything thanks to the adrenaline. I somehow stumbled into the KFC where this woman was trying to get into and called my mom. I was rather incoherent but somehow managed to get out the words accident and KFC. The employees were shocked at my state of appearance and mind and gave me water which I think I drank. When I stumbled back to the crumpled Spirit I was on the passenger side seat while the ambulance and cops arrived. The woman accused me of speeding when I was doing the limit of 40. She told my mother she thought I was speeding and my mom asked me what the limit was and through my tears I replied 40. The police would later back up my side on the speed issue. The woman was given a ticket for innattentive driving. She was in her 60s or 70s. My mom and sis brought me home and by then the adrenaline was wearing off and whoa the pain crashed in! My boyfriend at the time was freaking out while I was the one who was calm on the couch with a knee the size of a freaking softball!
I went to the doctor and they xrayed my head and neck and determined I had whiplash and I would get head and neck pains for the rest of my life due to this wreck. My knee was just bruised on the bone but it was still pretty huge. I didn't work that week suffice to say. There was nothing the block this woman's view of me coming and she made a very poor choice that still haunts me to this day. When my now husband was t boned by a little sorority bimbo 7 years ago in Manhattan the wreck came crashing back in my mind (no pun intended.)

I'm all for not issuing a drivers permit until they are 18. Save alot of lives. Now they have cell phones and texing, that number is going to increase, you betcha.

I have been involved twice. Once in a taxi on the interstate in San Francisco and another in someones rental car approaching the airport in Denver. Does it count if you leave your truck in gear when you get out and go into the post office? UGH!

Falling asleep is a bad idea when driving but being asleep may have saved my life. Glad to still be around.

Let's see, my mom and dad were in rear ended in a car accident when she was 7 months pregnant with me - does that count as my first one?

If not, when I was 5, my mom was driving down a 50 mph road when a car tried to cross the road, didn't see us, and hit the side/bumper of our car. We spun repeatedly, and landed in a ditch, right side up. No one was hurt, but I was scared (and it was before seatbelt requirements). I was so sure we would be on the news, but we weren't.
My boyfriend (now my husband) and I were going to a church dinner, and it was snowing and a little icey. We were going down hill, the car lost control, and we slid into another car. Again, no one hurt. We weren't going fast.

Myself, I was pulling out of a parking lot in college and hit a parked car. that's it. I need to change my answer. I think I put 3.

Been rear-ended 8 times while either stopped at a light/sign or waiting on traffic to make a turn.
