The National Weblog Service has issued a "cool" watch. Conditions are right for possible sightings of stillcoolandhere. This could possibly be associated with strong doses of spiderman, metta, jaguar, madmikesxxcxx, and cool. Be aware of new posters who post frequently (37 post in less than 24 hours) on new identities. Viewers should also look be aware of story threads dealing with Bush, Green, architecture, general government activity, etc.Should conditions warrant, the National Weblog Service will upgrade this watch to a warning.

Only brainwashed redstaters who hate all things good would ridacule the Waka. Most of the people that I knew who went were NOT "hippies". But then again look at the stampede crowd.....hicks.

I'm not sure what the promoters want from the state, but I think the state has come leaps and bounds from where they used to be regarding these types of festivals. Country Stampede is now in its second decade...obviously they've made it work with the state. Other state parks have festivals and events (albeit not on the same scale as WakarusaFest and Stampede), and their "friends groups" seem to be able to work things out. Given some of the other comments above as they relate to vendors not being paid, etc., would be my guess that the concert promoters just want to line their pockets - just reading between the lines here.Regarding money spent by out of towners - This captive audience camps mainly on site. They exit the turnpike near Lecompton and while they may pick up nominal supplies in town (nominal), a majority of their dollars are traded on the site with the approved vendors - and those, how do we say...that are not so "approved."I hope it goes somewhere else. It is more of a headache and a liability than a revenue producer for our town.

It's in the nature of this type of festival to be disorganized, slow, controversial and threatening discrimination; it's why we love lawrence.

Maybe we can keep the festival and change promoters.

I was born and raised in Lawrence, have lived here for more than a quarter century, have attended every Wakarusa Fest, and completely agree with Brett Mossiman.Security at Waka is absurd. I am a professional journalist who gets paid to cover the music at Waka, and yet I find myself and nearly everyone else there treated like second-rate citizens - basically guilty until proven innocent.Given the utter lack of problems that come with Waka, and the fact that all problems seem to stem from an overzealous security detail...I can't blame him one bit for not wanting to destroy his "street cred" and moving Waka someplace to where people are more appreciative. As a former Lawrence resident and a music fan, I've got to admit that I'm more than embarassed that my hometown - which prides itself on being "not like" the rest of the state - is so absolutely misguided on the subject.

I don't mind the Wakarusa festival, I've been to it and also to the Stampede. But I tend to think that if the organizers can't file their paperwork on time or pay their bills on time, why should we work any harder for them? Do what you are supposed to do in a timely fashion, pay vendors and fees on time and I'm sure the "government" will be happy to help.

Let the Wakarusa Festival stay and help it thrive!!!Lawrence is supposedly the best city in the state for the arts. With the negative attitudes like what I am reading here on the LJWorld; artists, musicians, theatre goers, etc will not want to live in or visit our city. Maybe the promoters should move it to Wichita. At least they're being progressive and not negative and regressive.

Nobody likes to play music. Nobody. The other musicians hurt you, sometimes very badly. First you play because your father wants you to. Then you play to get the girls. If you keep on playing, you do it for scholarships, and to get the girls. Then you play for the money and the girls. Then you get to just watch and listen to the music, and that's fun. But nobody likes to play music. Nobody.

this is revenue for lawrence! I think it is awesome that they have it here because you hear people talking about lawrence, ks from all over. we are just not known for our sports but we are also know for what beautiful state we have and one lady said "Kansas isn't flat". maybe next year it won't rain so much, then the people that are complaining will shut there traps. they have the same blood as us and they have the same kind of money as us. give em a break, just because they live a different life doesn't mean they don't have feelings. go easy and support the festival!

"Bitch all you want, but their dope is just as green as the next guys, and I ain't exactly seeing a stampede of out of town cash coming from these dirty hippies.I'm always getting approached for change.""Dirty hippies" with dope is the domain of KHP, KBI, DoCo Sherrif, or LPD. Is the dope okay if they aren't dirty hippies? Are the dirty hippies okay if they don't have dope? It's real easy. Question: "Do you have any change?" Answer: "No."I'm confused by your inability to handle even the most basic conversational skills.

haggisgirl 5 years, 8 months ago

The question isn't phrased very well. What exactly do the promoters want Lawrence to do if its the State that they apparently have issues with? Also, I've hear first hand from a local vendor that they still haven't been paid their bill. It would appear that what the "Lawrence economy is missing out" on is Wakarusa Fest paying its bills. That's what city leaders should be concerned with.

0

ronwell_dobbs 5 years, 8 months ago

I have a suggestion. Let's trade the Country Stampede with Tuttle Creek. Then we'll see how much we really want the economic benefits of a festival. Personally the idea of swarms of drunk C&W cowboys drunk as monkeys and grabbing young womens' hind ends will make the smelly hippies seem like a welcome memory.

0

whatatown 5 years, 8 months ago

It is so wonderful having a festival in our backyard. Wakarusa brings tons of really great bands, and I for one appreciate being able to go and see so many of my favorites for one low price, in one place. It's not just "smelly hippies" that go and enjoy the music, food and atmosphere. (one of the pizza stands has absolutely the best pizza I have ever had, hands down). People, such as lance1jhawk are just spoil sports that can't seem to have any fun and are intolerant a-holes. It's not due to attitudes and people like him that gives Lawrence it's good name. It is due to events like Wakarusa and the outdoor concerts, thriving downtown life and individuals that don't quite seem to match up with the Kansas mentality that provide the community with it's truly unique style.
