Not in the face of all these budget cuts. Think of what the Boys & Girls Club + Humane Society could do with $9,000, not to mention all the other agencies asked to make cuts b/c City Hall didn't have the revenue they thought they would this year.

I wonder if there are 100 other stupid expenditures like this one, that would be close to a million.

If they had won, everyone would be saying it was the best idea ever. Monday morning quaterbacking is easy when you hide behind a "username".

With all those service cuts, the city wants to do WHAT? What good is All-America City good for with a city without services for the citizens?
WereAllMonkeys 6 years ago
kuthruandthru, I note you also hide behind a "Username." I personally wonder what would have been the advantage of winning this 'award.' Would it have enticed more people to a city with the highest housing costs in Kansas? Maybe it will to get a job making 5-6 dollars an hour so that they can spend almost all of their paycheck on rent. Oh, I know it will be open a business downtown, with really limited parking, transient pan-handlers, and again rediculusly high rent/lease rates. Or maybe it will be to drive an SUV on the off-road obstacle courses the city call streets. Oh oh, I know, they would come to the All American City so they can put their children in an overcrowded school that is going to dump the WRAP program to save money.

I wonder how the laid off employees feel about this?

"All American City" - sounds like something Lawrence already is. So why, exactly, do we have to spend money we don't really have to get this title? So Lawrence can listed in some little tourist book that many tourists don't even know about? Or is it a " I'm better than the Jones' down the street" thing? Either way, Thank You City Commission for wasting money that could have been spent on city road repairs, community projects, etc. after the commission just reduced funding for them!

According to the website of the National Civics League, the organization that hands out the awares (and has for over 50 years), the benefits are listed here:

Marion (Marion Lynn) says: Send me the nine grand next time and I will declare Lawrence to be a Special City, in need of Special Care and Special Treatment.
Wouldn't work. Everyone would know you are bought off. You have expressed your disdain for this city and its residents too many times in these forums. Way too much name-calling and way too many insults from you, to pull that off.

"The city spent about $9,000 to send its delegation to the competition, Douglass said. In addition to Douglass, the city's delegation included City Manager David Corliss; Chamber President and CEO Lavern Squier; downtown business owner Lora Wiley; Elaine McCullough, a board member for Success by Six; Rebecca Buford, executive director of Tenants to Homeowners; and former Lawrence mayor Bonnie Lowe. The chamber paid for Squier's expenses. The city paid for the rest of the delegation."
And I thought the CITY had budget problem, not if they can throw away money like this..........Please!!!

No big deal. The half cent sales tax will pay that $9,000 back in no time. It would only take $1,800,000 in sales to do it. Piece of cake.

Did we ever find out how much it cost the taxpayers to send the City Commissioners' on their joy ride to Washington DC last year? Is there a special line in the budget for paid vacations for commissioners and their friends?

"Is there a special line in the budget for paid vacations for commissioners and their friends?" Hey don't leave out the city manager too.

Pretty stupid, I'd say. I'm glad they don't manage my money. I'd be severely bankrupt in a very short time.
