First of all, I realize that schools are the last/only line of defense for some kids to have issues resolved that SOME parents turn a blind eye on or that some kids live in situations of very poor parenting or no parenting at all. However, as a parent of a child with a disability, we are SICK of schools continuously trying to parent our children and to scold parents when the schools havn't a clue as to what is REALLY going on. Do they have to be totally intrusive into the lives and privacy of 99.9% of the students and families just so they can save the world with that 0.01%? I don't think so.

I think it's RIDICULOUS!!! Ranks up there with taking cupcakes out of the lineup for birthdays. One more thing for these kids to worry about and be humiliated in front of other kids. Let's get back to TEACHING .. if you want to teach nutrition that's fine. We waste TOO much time with crap like this. Our kids aren't learning anything but how to take tests. We're being passed up by other nations in skills, languages and general learning.

I was shocked to learn that in my daughters 5th grade class, more than half cannot complete basic multiplication. They have grids on the backs of books or calculators they are allowed to use rather than PROBLEM SOLVE!! These basic facts should have been mastered LONG before 5th grade. Now they are having "special" math sessions to help the kids along. While I'm glad this is happening, parents need to be paying attention, working WITH their keeps to help them succeed and raise heck with the school when it isn't doing their part to teach. Unfortunately, lots of parents count on the school to do all the teaching. Parents need to step up to the plate and do THEIR part.

I know this got off the subject of the weight thing, but again, this is another thing that needs to be worked on at home. You can weigh kids, but what good is it going to do if they go home, sit on the couch, eat junk food in front of the TV until the parents get home, and then have a quick dinner - either out somewhere loaded with fat, or from a box loaded with fat. I'm guilty of it as well. I know when I get home from work, I'm tired and just want to get dinner over. Something quick and easy. Unfortunately our kids are paying the price as are we as the US becomes heavier and heavier!
