Ten youths and five adults from Lawrence joined 35,000 other youths and adults from across the country for the 2012 Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s Youth Gathering from July 18 to July 22 in New Orleans. During the gathering, walls for three houses were built, 1,200 pints of blood and the equivalent of 500 heads of hair were donated, more than $400,000 was given to build wells around the world, and 400 service projects were completed. The Lawrence Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #309 held its third annual Fire in the Hole Barbecue Competition from June 1 to June 2. The recipients of this year’s fundraising were the Douglas County Toys for Tots and the Lawrence Police Department’s Blue Santa program, a charity that helps needy families at Christmas with food and presents. The competition raised $7,000 this year and was split between the two charities.
