Lawrence resident Kara Laning, left, gets some help from Ranita Wilks, right, who is an independent living skills specialist at Independence Inc. Laning was taking a cooking class Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011, at Independence Inc, 2001 Haskell Ave. Laning said she learned to cook healthier through a program called Living Well. The program is among a dozen that come out of the Kansas University’s Research and Training Center on Independent Living each year. Wilks is involved in another program that's working to increase health care access for people with disabilities.

Shutt and hundreds of people in "Cables for Cainan" had urged KDOT to install cable median barriers after her son, Cainan, 5, was killed in an April 16 cross-median crash that resulted in a double fatality near Eudora.

Alison Shutt, of Eudora, holds her daughter Courtlynn after the Kansas Department of Transportation in Eudora Wednesday announced plans to install a cable median barrier on Kansas Highway 10 near the spot where Shutt's son, Cainan, died in an April 16 crash. Courtlynn was also injured in the accident and has recovered from a broken neck.

The Kansas Department of Transportation will install cable median barriers along two two-mile stretches of Kansas Highway 10 east of Lawrence, including a section where 5-year-old Cainan Shutt of Eudora died in April. A white cross for Ryan Pittman, 24, also killed in that crash, sits next to the highway.
