Josh Burnett, Lawrence, puts some brisket on the smoker late Friday afternoon for the Mount Oread Aerie No. 309 Fraternal Order of Eagles Fire in the Hole BBQ Cook-Off. The public is invited to 1803 W. Sixth St. from noon to 4 p.m. today to sample the barbecue for a $6 cover charge. The meal tickets include a people’s choice ballot for the top barbecue at the event. There also will be a raffle for a gas grill, with tickets selling for $1 or six for $5. Proceeds from the event benefit Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care.

Jeff Miller and Gerald Kipp pose for a photo during the Art Tougeau parade from inside Kipp's rod-iron Volkswagen Beetle, a parade staple. Originally built by Lee Miller, Jeff's grandfather, the car has been owned by three families, spanning just as many generations. When Kipp died in 2005, the car became stationary until this year, as Jeff, now a sophomore at Kansas University, will drive it in the parade.
