Work is under way on a seven-story apartment, office and retail building at the southwest corner of Ninth and New Hampshire streets. The city’s Public Incentives Review Committee on Thursday recommended giving a development group led by Lawrence businessman Doug Compton about $280,000 in incentives related to the project.

School children enter the water Wednesday June 29, 2011 on Santa Monica Beach in Santa Monica, Calif. Eleven percent of California's beaches reported elevated levels of bacterial contamination, the largest amount in five years but Santa Monica Beach was not among the ones mentioned. The Natural Resources Defense Council issued a report Wednesday detailing the water quality for the country's most popular beaches.

Johnson County Sheriff's officer Mark Rokusek is one of several deputies who found Rachel Perez's in the attic of her home. Rokusek described the scene as “shocking” and initially thought the boy was a toddler because of his size.

Nice ride: Free State High School junior Baylie Moon captured state honors at the Kansas National Barrel Horse Association Finals held May 20-22 at the Expo Center in Topeka. In addition to placing first in the Youth 18 & Under division on Classy’s Cashbox, Baylie also placed fifth in the open finals competing against 286 riders. She is the daughter of Randy and Raelynn Moon of Lawrence, who submitted the photo.
