Lawrence High School freshman and senior mentors, in yellow T-shirts, participate in an orientation activity Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011, at LHS. Wednesday is the first day of school and this year's ninth graders will comprise the first ever freshman class at LHS.

This is a photo of my mother, Helen Francis Fussman -- and her mother and father -- on either side, taken at graduation in 1936, at 1144 Louisiana, where she lived. She met my father (also a KU graduate), whom she later married, looking out the window to the house next door, to the north.
