While the focus of this image is on the musicians in background, the dominant element is the conductor in the foreground. This device helps lead the viewer eyes into the photograph creating a greater sense of depth.
The wing of a radio-controlled airplane looms large in the foreground of this photograph. Although it is only an inanimate object, it works as a device to lead a viewers eye to the subjects of the image. In addition it angles across the photograph to create interesting framing of the two men.
Without the foreground element of the balance beam and the feet the photo would be one-dimensional image of a row of young gymnasts. Each element contributes to the other and keeps the readers eye moving within the photograph.
