Driver suspected of fleeing law enforcement arrested after accident, faces multiple charges

A 23-year-old Lawrence man was booked Friday into Douglas County Jail on multiple charges following a two-vehicle accident that occurred while he was allegedly fleeing a law enforcement officer.

According to a Kansas Highway Patrol report, the accident occurred at 7:28 p.m. Friday when Nilo Isaac Pena, 23, of Lawrence, drove northbound on Alabama Street in a 2017 Kia Sedona in a suspected attempt to elude police. The accident occurred when the suspect entered the Ninth Street intersection and struck a 2017 Chevrolet Camaro driven by Megan D. McMurphy, 30, of Lawrence. McMurphy was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Pena was booked into jail without bond on suspicion of aggravated battery from DUI causing bodily harm, attempting to flee and elude law enforcement by reckless driving, possession of a depressant, possession of marijuana, possession of an opiate, opium, narcotic or certain stimulant, use/possession of a drug paraphernalia and two counts of failure to appear.
