University of Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self and Lawrence Deputy Superintendent Anna Stubblefield are set to rappel down a building as part of the “Over the Edge Global” fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club.
Alissa Bauer, marketing and communications director for the Lawrence Boys & Girls Club, said the event would be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the 200 block of East Ninth Street. Food and beverage vendors and children’s activities will be available on the blocked-off street. The main attraction will be dozens of of people rappelling off the 888 Lofts building, which First Management Inc. made available.
All those going over the edge pledged to raise $1,000, Bauer said. The Boys & Girls Club has raised $47,000 in pledges from the about 50 people signed up to rappel.
Among the participants are Self and Stubblefield, who entered into a fundraising challenge last month. Self will rappel about 11 a.m., and Stubblefield will rappel about 11:40 a.m., Bauer said. Stubblefield and her eight teammates had raised $9,530 as of Wednesday morning, Bauer said; Self has personally raised $643 and has recruited three teammates, but Bauer said she didn’t have fundraising numbers for the rest of his team.
Stubblefield said she was happy with her fundraising effort and planned to raise more but didn’t think she had her head-to-head fundraising challenge against Self wrapped up.
“He’s pretty busy,” she said. “I think he may have a different strategy. We have until 30 days after the event to raise money.”
