A man reportedly attacked and tried to abduct a woman jogging early Thursday morning on the Prairie Park Nature Center trail in eastern Lawrence, police say.

The suspect may have been intending sexual assault, based on additional actions he took, according to a Lawrence Police Department news release Friday morning.

The attack occurred about 6:45 a.m. Thursday morning on the trail, police said. A 40-year-old woman told police that she was jogging on the path when a man attempted to grab her from behind.

“The female was able to fight to get away from the suspect and flee the area,” police said.

The woman who was attacked reported the incident to police a few hours after it occurred, Sgt. Amy Rhoads said.

Officers responding to the area couldn’t find anyone there, police said. Patrol officers and detectives continue to investigate. The news release did not disclose more about the possibility of the attack being an intended sex crime.

The suspect was described as a white male wearing light-colored pants and white shoes with black stripes, possibly Adidas brand, according to police. He was possibly associated with a blue tent near a picnic table in the center of the park.

The 72-acre Prairie Park Nature Center, home to Mary’s Lake and a jogging trail, is located east of Harper Street between 27th and 31st streets.

Police urge anyone who was in the area on Thursday morning and may have seen anyone on the path to share that information with them by calling 785-832-7509.

Also in light of the report, police are reminding residents to take safety precautions, Rhoads said.

Especially for anyone who goes out on trails alone, it’s a good idea to take a cellphone and let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to be back, Rhoads said. She said while walking or jogging, be aware of your surroundings and turn music down so you’re able to hear what’s going on around you.
